birds of paradise

I remember the day
when i came home
everything rearranged
my new skin glowing
just to ride my bike
through the cemetery
just to ride my bike
in april
in april
all my bedspreads were changed
the walls painted green
all mistakes are erased
in the birth of a day
oh the immensity
within a being
oh the immensity
of spring
in april
you were new and ripening
before i knew you
walk to work in hospitals
near bodies of water
oh the lavender blooms
the colors of your heart
oh the birds of paradise
in april
in april
we were made from things
that tear
we were born in the blink
of an eyelash
oh the profundity
of life in each other
oh the profundity
of life
in april

we slept through most of the winter
we were much younger than before
let’s go knee deep in the snow
February is made for this
I think my car can make it
let's meet on 26th and Cliff
let's go out to Gitchie
let's go to Palisades
let's go to Great Bear
let's go anywhere
and i saw the ghost of Jesse
on that bridge over the gully
let's go out to Gitchie
let's go anywhere
let's go anywhere
let's go anywhere
we dreamt of horses in the heather
we were much more intrepid than before
I saw a bloodhound scenting the boulder
let us seek all of the lonely places
that's where the real transformation happens
let us reach deep beneath our faces
let's go out to Gitchie
let's go to Palisades
let's go to Great Bear
let's go anywhere
and i saw the ghost of Jesse
on that bridge over the gully
let's go out to Gitchie
let's go anywhere
let's go anywhere
let's go anywhere….

up in White Horse Lake
we swam in the dark
and caught some rainbow trout
you should've seen
the joy in her heart
and down on the Indian trails
my sisters got scared and lost
but my dad found them
underneath the oak trees and moss
and maybe there's no reason
to fight
and baby
we're alright
out past Gavin's Point
at the lookout in july
i saw and felt
the holy spirit come alive
just north of Brainerd
we got drunk and lied
the next morning
we're full of shame
with nowhere to hide
and maybe
there's no fight to fight
and baby
we're alright
beneath the escarpment
the Carmelite was crying
on Christmas eve
and i was in the hinterlands
hunting for the things
hunters seek
and can someone
get a hold
of the iconographer?
just to capture
these mystics
shrouded in the conifers
and maybe
there's no fight to fight
and baby were alright
up in White Horse Lake
we swam in the dark
and caught some rainbow trout
you should've seen
the joy in her heart

I’m wrapped in purple vestments
I’m an adventheart waiting
the wreaths around her wrists
are weighty and burdensome
we’re singing ancient songs and weeping
in the wilderness
it’s so cold out here
but we’re adventhearts
with the patience of glaciers
I’m nascent in my being
I’m the lenten one, waiting for flames
the branches on her breasts
are budding in a burning love
the smallest one awaits us quietly
in the teal and turquoise tundra
it’s so heavy here
but we’re adventhearts
with the patience of glaciers
and i see cosmos in your eyes
magellanic clouds in your eyes
im wrapped in purple vestments
i’m an adventheart waiting…..
